Electrical safety is essential in care homes, where staff and residents rely on a wide range of electrical appliances. This Online PAT Testing Course is designed to teach care home staff and maintenance teams how to perform PAT testing efficiently and safely.

Module 1 – Why Do We Have to PAT Test? 

Learn why PAT testing is essential for preventing electrical hazards and ensuring compliance in care homes. 

 

Module 2 – Class of Appliance 

Understand the differences between Class I and Class II appliances and how to identify both classes.  

 

Module 3 – Planning and Frequency of PAT Testing 

Find out how often PAT testing should be carried out based on the type of appliance, work environment, class of equipment and previous failure rate. 

 

Module 4 – Forms and Labels 

Learn how to document PAT testing results correctly and use PAT labels to track appliance safety. 

 

Module 5 – User Checks and Formal Visual Inspection 

Discover how care home staff can identify electrical faults through user checks and formal visual inspections. 

 

Module 6 – Checking Fuses 

Understand how to check fuses are safe and the correct value fuse is used in electrical appliances.  

 

Module 7 – Testing a Class I Appliance 

Learn how to perform PAT tests on Class I appliances such as sandwich makers and kettles. 

 

Module 8 – Testing a Class II Appliance 

Learn the correct procedures for PAT testing Class II appliances. 

 

Module 9 – Test Examples 

This module consists of 5 lessons giving real world PAT testing examples across a range of appliances. 

 

Online Course Duration and Certification 

The course typically takes between 2 - 3 hours to complete.  

For each module a short test will follow the video learning content. The tests for each module will need to be complete before the course participant will have access to their certificate. The tests can be retaken and the course content reviewed if any tests are not passed first time. 

 

Upon passing, a certificate is provided via email or can be downloaded from the Thinkific platform.
